PS If the kids have never been to NY, what better introduction than Liberty and Ellis Island? They can look across to Manhattan and feel the same longing the immigrants felt a hundred years ago.

Yes, the cab is a flat rate. Add in tip and tolls though and it approaches $100. I did a car service from Newark once and it was fine. My hesitation is that Continental seems to have a huge cushion...

I too would choose the train for coming back to Newark, and use the airport bus for going over.  However, Penn station can be confusing with long lines at the ticket window;  so it might be worthwhile...
